1933年出生於日本東京，畢業於東京都立千歲女子高中。戶川原本在貿易公司擔任英文打字小姐，之後學會了法語，在1957年轉爲法國香頌歌手。她從小喜歡讀書，尤其愛讀推理小説，作品以描寫女性的生活和心理見長。她1962年以女性心理小説「幻影之城」與佐賀潛的「華麗的屍體」一同獲得第八屆江戶川亂步獎。另著有「獵人日記」「蒼白肌膚」「海市蜃樓的帶子」「夢魔」「火之吻」等，其作被翻譯於國外依然頗受好評。不過自1984年之後，戶川就不再發表新作。
